So excited to visit the Natural History Museum, London @nhm_wpy. It was my first time at the Museum and when I went in and I saw the blue whale skeleton hanging, I teared up. It was a dream come true. Really, really impresssive, and to go with my love, the woman who studies the blue whales @susiebuchan, even more exciting still. It was complete.

I’m also glad because when I was looking at my picture, there was a child next to me telling the story of the whale and the boat strike to his mother. The message reached a child, and that makes all the hard work worth it.

As we left London, new COVID-19 lockdown measures were announced. I hope this nightmare passes soon. Stay safe everyone.

56th WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

I’m delighted and honored because I have been awarded at the 56th Wildlife Photographer of the Year by the Natural History Museum of London, Highly Commended in the Wildlife Photojournalist category.

Many thanks to NHM and congratulations to all the photographers.

I am happy because it means a great acknowlegment of my work also because this photograph highlights a global marine conservation issue.

This image shows a problem with cetacean strikes worldwide and a local problem that we have in Canary Islands where the most important population of pilot whales in Europe lives.

I have spent more that a decade photographing these animals off my home island of Tenerife.

I would like to say many thanks to all of my sponsors, Oris, Aqualung, RVCA and Canon Spain, because without their support this would be imposible.

BLUE WHALE

Este es uno de los momentos más espectaculares que he podido tener en el mar. El encuentro con una ballena azul. Más allá de la foto, que obviamente es mejorable con unas condiciones de mar más favorables, fue la experiencia de estar en frente del animal más grande que ha existido en el planeta.
Durante mi estancia en Chañaral de Aceituno, el pasado diciembre, tuve la suerte de colaborar y convivir con un grupo de científicos especializados en acústica. Entre ellos estaba Susie Buchan una oceanógrafa que lleva más de 10 años estudiando la acústica de la ballena azul en la Patagonia chilena y que ha descubierto un dialecto regional entre estos gigantes.
El ver la ballena azul fue toda una experiencia, el escuchar el audio de la ballena azul cedido por Susie (pinchar abajo) ha sido como llevarme el pack completo. A loggerhead sea turtle swims entangled in abandoned fishing gear, off the coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands, in the northeast Atlantic Ocean.

The loggerhead is classed as a ‘vulnerable’ species globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but the northeast Atlantic subpopulation is listed as ‘endangered’. Entrapment in nets intended for other species, and in gear left abandoned by fishing boats is the prime threat to marine turtles, followed by human consumption of meat and eggs, and coastal development affecting their habitat.
